London — Wednesday star Jenna Ortega sparked debate online this week after a tense moment with an overenthusiastic fan at the London premiere of the hit Netflix series’ second season.
The 22-year-old actress was greeting attendees and signing autographs on the red carpet when, according to onlookers, a fan loudly shouted her name. Footage of the interaction, later deleted but widely shared on X (formerly Twitter), showed Ortega visibly reacting and asking the fan to stop. The clip went viral, amassing more than 1.8 million views before being removed.
The original post’s caption read: “Oh, she’s upset — and rightfully so. Shouting in someone’s face like that is completely unnecessary.”
While many defended the Scream actress, agreeing she had every right to address the outburst, others criticized her handling of the situation.
Some commenters argued that fans, particularly younger ones, are often socially awkward and easily excited when meeting their favorite celebrities. One user wrote, “Most of her fans are teenage girls between 12 and 18 — they’re bound to scream when they see her.” Others accused Ortega of being “unfriendly” or “overreacting” to an otherwise harmless show of enthusiasm.
Defenders pointed out that Ortega has spoken openly about her severe social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and that the red carpet environment can be overstimulating. “She’s clearly overwhelmed. People forget celebrities are human too,” one supporter wrote. Another added, “If she’s right in front of you, you don’t need to shout in her face.”
This is not the first time Ortega has faced controversy. Earlier this year, she drew criticism from both social media users and Hollywood professionals after revealing she had altered several of her character’s lines in Wednesday, saying the original script “didn’t make sense” and felt “boring.” Some industry voices labeled her remarks “arrogant,” while others defended her as committed to improving the show.
Despite the ongoing debate, Ortega remains a central figure in Netflix’s Wednesday franchise and continues to attract significant attention — both for her on-screen performances and her candid off-screen moments.
