Donald Trump is well known for his blunt comments toward the press. However, an exchange aboard Air Force One with a female reporter went viral after the President called her, “piggy”.
The journalist involved was later identified by multiple outlets as Catherine Lucey, a correspondent for Bloomberg.
What Led to the Viral ‘Piggy’ Comment?
The controversial remark occurred while the President was aboard Air Force One. The reporter, who appeared to be Lucey, asked Trump a question regarding the Jeffrey Epstein files and his past relationship with the deceased sex offender.
In a viral clip of the interaction, the reporter asked, “If there’s nothing incriminating in the files, sir…” before Trump interrupted her. Trump wagged his finger in the reporter’s face and commanded, “Quiet. Quiet, piggy”.
A Pattern of Confrontation
The “piggy” incident was not the first time Trump had recently scolded Lucey. Just days earlier, Trump reportedly reprimanded her on the tarmac at West Palm Beach Airport. When Lucey asked Trump about Tucker Carlson’s interview with Nick Fuentes, Trump allegedly responded, “You are the worst! You’re with Bloomberg, right? You are the worst! I don’t know why they even have you”.
White House Defense and Journalistic Support
The White House defended the President’s actions following the viral exchange. In a statement to The Guardian, the White House accused the reporter of “inappropriate” and “unprofessional” behavior toward her colleagues on the plane. The statement concluded by saying, “If you’re going to give it, you have to be able to take [it]”.
Despite the White House’s defense, several well-known journalists supported Lucey. CNN’s Kaitlan Collins tweeted praise for her and her colleague, saying, “My colleagues in the White House press corps, @marykbruce and @catherine_lucey, both do a great job”.
A spokesperson for Bloomberg News also issued a statement to The Guardian. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of their work, stating, “Our White House journalists perform a vital public service, asking questions without fear or favor,” and affirmed that the outlet remains focused on fair and accurate reporting.
Who is Catherine Lucey?
Catherine Lucey is an accomplished journalist. She currently works for Bloomberg and previously served as a White House reporter for The Wall Street Journal. Lucey has not yet commented publicly on the incident.
Note on Mary Bruce
It is important to clarify that Mary Bruce of ABC News was not the reporter Trump called “piggy”. However, Trump did berate Bruce in a separate, recent incident. On November 18, 2025, during a press conference with Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Bruce asked the Crown Prince about the brutal murder of a journalist and why Americans should trust him, given the anger from 9/11 families. Trump quickly responded to Bruce’s question by suggesting that ABC News should lose its license.
The situation highlights the tense relationship between the President and certain members of the press, where verbal confrontations have become public events. Like a high-stakes chess match, journalists attempt to hold power accountable by asking difficult questions, sometimes resulting in rapid, often aggressive, counter-moves from the political figure.
