The long-running legal and personal feud between recording artist Ray J and reality television stars Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner has escalated, with Ray J filing a counter-suit after K&K (Kim and Kris) initially sued him for defamation. Ray J’s new filing asserts that the famous sex tape was not leaked against Kim’s will, contradicting the narrative promoted by the mother-daughter duo for two decades.
According to new legal documents obtained by TMZ, Ray J claims that he and Kim recorded the sex tape consensually in 2003. Furthermore, he alleges that in 2006, they discussed publishing the tape, and Kim reportedly insisted that her mother, Kris Jenner, handle the commercial exploitation and release of the video.
In the suit, presented by attorney Howard King, Ray J accuses Kim and Kris of having “spent two decades spreading the false story that the sex tape was leaked against their will”. He contends that K&K are now “furious” because he “no longer wants to play along with their tall tale”.
The counter-suit sheds light on prior legal dealings between the parties, centered on the sex video and its continued discussion on television.
Ray J claims that he was falsely accused on the show “The Kardashians” by Kim, Kris, and Ye (Kanye West) of several serious offenses, including:
Following these televised accusations, Ray J states he initiated legal action. The documents reveal that Kim, Kris, and their production company subsequently reached a settlement with him. As part of this alleged agreement, Kim reportedly agreed to pay Ray J $6 million.
Crucially, Ray J claims the settlement included a clause that strictly prohibited any public mention or reference to the sexual video in “The Kardashians”. However, the documents allege that almost immediately after signing the agreement, Kim, Kris, Ye, and Kendall Jenner made statements that violated this clause. Ray J is now asserting that he is entitled to $1 million in damages due to this breach of contract.
Kim and Kris initially sued Ray J for defamation “last month”. Ray J argues that their suit is not genuinely about defamation, but rather “about publicity, power, and punishment”. He claims they filed an unfounded lawsuit to “instrumentalize the judicial system, evade their contractual obligations, and sacrifice themselves for fame”.
The defamation suit appears to have stemmed from comments Ray J made referencing the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. Ray J explains in the legal documents that he saw parallels between the RICO law and the alleged actions of Kim and Kris:
Ray J stated that he considered filing his own civil RICO lawsuit against Kim and Kris. He revealed that he made an aside comment about the Kardashians and RICO law during an interview for the Tubi documentary, “United States vs. Sean Combs,” saying, “If I were told that the Kardashians are being accused of racketeering, I might believe it”. He also claimed he thought his microphone was off during a September 2025 live stream when he remarked: “The feds are coming to investigate because I can no longer be the bad guy”.
Kim and Kris’s legal team swiftly dismissed Ray J’s counter-claims. Their attorney, Alex Spiro, told TMZ that Ray J, having realized he is losing the original defamation case and becoming “disoriented,” has resorted to an “incoherent and rambling distraction” that fails to intimidate anyone. Spiro concluded that Ray J will also lose this “frivolous case”.
This ongoing legal battle reignites public speculation surrounding the infamous tape’s origin. Online commentary dating back years suggests that the story of the video being “leaked” is false.
One commentator noted the legal requirements for adult material publication:
However, public opinion remains divided. While some suggest Ray J is just “heavy” and continues to “exploit the issue” after having spent the money he previously accepted, others recall early episodes of The Kardashians where Kim seemed worried about being left with nothing and was “re encouraged” by her mother. Another comment suggested that Ray J is “broke and needs money,” which is why he brings up this story every year.
This dramatic legal confrontation sets the stage for a high-stakes court battle, pitting Ray J’s detailed contractual and RICO-related allegations against the immense legal power of Kim Kardashian, a “nearly lawyer,” and her “momager”.
