Filmmaker SS Rajamouli is currently facing controversy and legal trouble following a recent comment he made about Lord Hanuman. The backlash stems from remarks delivered during the grand Globetrotter event in Hyderabad, which was organized to announce the name of his forthcoming film, Varanasi.
The launch event was delayed due to several technical difficulties. Reacting to these glitches, the popular filmmaker said that he felt let down by God. Following massive criticism for his viral comment, the Rashtriya Vanara Sena filed a formal complaint at the Saroornagar Police Station in Hyderabad. The group alleges that SS Rajamouli’s remarks were hurtful to religious sentiments and they are seeking official action.
Rajamouli apologized to the large crowd that had gathered for the launch. He explained his personal lack of faith in gods, stating, “I don’t have much faith in gods. I don’t believe in God.”.
However, he mentioned that his father, V Vijayendra Prasad, had previously told him that Lord Hanuman would guide him. After the technical glitch occurred, Rajamouli admitted that he expressed his anger to both his father and his wife. His wife is described as a big admirer of Hanuman, treating the god like her friend. Rajamouli told them, “Is this how he leads me?” and “Is this how he does things?”.
It is notable that the teaser for Varanasi that was shared at the event included a glimpse of Hanuman from the ‘Treta Yuga’ section.
Amid the current debate, an old tweet posted by SS Rajamouli over a decade ago—in 2011—has gone viral again. In that tweet, which was posted as a reply to another user, the filmmaker had stated his preference for Lord Krishna over Lord Ram.
The decade-old post read: “But I never liked lord ram. Lord Krishna is my favourite of all the avatars,”. Critics have quickly shared screenshots of the tweet, though many have noted that Rajamouli had later clarified the context of his statement.
Varanasi is SS Rajamouli’s much-anticipated magnum opus, following the massive worldwide appreciation garnered by his 2022 hit, RRR. The film, which has several references to the Ramayana, stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. It is scheduled for release in 2027.
